Gasket! PTS 30.38.01.11 Page 71

Spiral wound gaskets

  1. Spiral wound, AISI 316(L), graphite-filled gaskets shall be used instead of spiral wound, asbestos-filled gaskets. Spiral wound gaskets, with inner rings to provide additional strength, shall be used in the following cases:
  • class 900 and higher;
  • diameters larger than DN 600, regardless of service class and filler material;
  • all PTFE-filled spiral wound gaskets, regardless of service class and diameter;
  • if protection of the filler material against corrosion is required (e.g. graphite filler during steam/air de-coking) or to prevent the filler material from reaching too high a temperature;
  • if it is necessary for the annular space to be filled in order to reduce the possibility of turbulent flow, or to prevent accumulation of solids, or to prevent erosion of the flange faces.
  1. Spiral wound/Monel 400 gaskets may be used up to a design temperature of 400°C.
  2. Spiral wound/Inconel 600/graphite gaskets may be used up to a design temperature of 650 °C.
  3. Spiral wound gaskets shall have a colour code in accordance with ASME B16.20.
  4. Spiral wound gaskets shall not be used in sizes DN 1000 and larger.
